September saw us in Malawi finish on a high note after yet another very busy, fruitful quarter. Here at Empower Malawi, we continue to grow despite numerous challenges and we are getting stronger and stronger as the sun sets and rises. It’s like we have been sitting on grandee and now it’s just right about to explode- pushing us into stardom 🙂
Between July and September 2014, we at Empower Malawi have seen our work expand to Nkhata Bay where we will be working on establishing a savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) thanks to a partnership with Reho Travel– an Australian B-Corp company who will be funding part of the project in partnership with Empower Projects. This expansion comes with the need for additional staff members. We expect to hire 3 new staff members starting from November 1. I am happy to see Empower Malawi grow like this but am also conscious of the many challenges that rapid growth brings including managing a diverse team so that each one is happy to work with us while achieving our goals and vision.
During the same period, Empower Malawi undertook its very first true consultancy work for Adziwa Primary School- a business development and support project for an orphanage just outside Lilongwe City thanks to Opportunity-2-Do who funded our work. Nelson Mandela once said ‘it always looks impossible until its done’ and I completely agree with him as that’s exactly what my feeling was when I accepted to lead the Empower Malawi team to start undertaking consultancy work. Now, opportunities are opening up including being invited to talks about Empower Malawi and our work. The most recent one being an invitation by the American Peace Corps Volunteers during an induction training for 60 news Volunteers who are about to roll out various projects in Malawi.
In the coming months, we will be nurturing the consultancy arm of Empower Malawi so that we can turn it into an income generation stream to cater for local overhead costs. In the meantime, we are also busy organising logistics for January 2015 when we will have a second hit (and final) for the Kapita Earthship Community Centre between 12 and 24 January 2015. Until next time- Love always, Jones!
