It became clear to me upon examination that it (working on social projects) was an escape – a drug of sorts. My intentions on the surface were good…but the internal drivers of this call to action were not entirely altruistic.
HAPPY new year to everyone! Clock by clock days hide behind the door- 2012 is now last year. It was an exciting year for Empower Inc’s initiative in Malawi, the Malawi project in all aspects of leadership, projects, partnerships and presence.
It started like a cat playing with a teddy bear when I met Ben Cole an Australian citizen who is currently consulting for the United Nations International Children’s’ Education Fund (UNICEF) in Malawi.
Empower and partner Sewa Lanka chose to collaborate with Puthumunmarchicholai in Batticaloa, a war affected community of 614 residents that currently face deep social, economic and environmental hardship.
We are hiring! We are looking for a Field Officer for our Kapita Project in Mzimba to start work as soon as practically possible. The field officer will be based right in the community to work on daily basis with community leaders, project committee members and other stakeholders.
So far there has been good progress. More and more people now understand what our project is about and in particular they understand their roles to achieving our vision of making Kapita a self reliant area, with booming businesses powered by green energy.
I was 4 years old as I stood with my mother in a crowded public bus in Kandy, Sri Lanka. I heard the drop of coins across the floor of the bus as an elderly women prepared to pass her bus fare to the conductor who was squeezing through.
It’s been a while since we’ve published a post but don’t let that mislead you, we’ve been super busy! We have a whole string of updates on the horizon but I will start with what’s happening on the ground right now.
Our visit to Malawi was a real eye opener. Life comes to a standstill after 6-7pm, many having no recourse apart from sleep. As it stands, opportunities for social interaction, work or studying are (pardon the pun) dim.
