As with all our projects in Malawi, our focus is fundamental aspects of sustainability; food production, water systems, renewable energy and sanitation to improve student wellbeing and model resilient practices for the wider community. Our work with Katona Primary School, a rural school with an enrolment of 412 (2024 baseline) has delivered the following impacts to date:


Key impacts:

Meal program: Breakfasts 2–3 days per week; 6 acres cultivated for the meal program on communal land. This was launched in July 2025.

School Kitchen: To support the school breakfast program, a kitchen, replete with energy-efficient stoves, and a storeroom, was constructed.

Water access: 10,000L of water access through a rainwater harvesting system at the school.

Orchards: Over 85 trees planted and maintained.

Textbooks: Over 500 textbooks donated to improve ratios from 1:10 to 1:1 - 1:2 across all core subjects.

Sanitation: Four composting toilets and two large urinals installed for boys and girls. These produce approx 300 kgs of compost per year

Capacity Building: 100 community members trained in permaculture design, 83 lead farmers adopted permaculture farming methods such as composting, mulching, companion planting and using swales.

Having completed the majority of our design and infrastructure work, the remainder of our collaboration will focus on continued expansion of the farm and refresher training to ensure that there is strong local capacity to maintain and build on these sustainable foundations.
